This was my first manga story, done way back from 1998 to 1999, when I was still at university. Up until then, I’ve never drawn a manga; nor much of anything at all. I got off on a slow start, changed my mind 150 times over which direction the story will go during it’s course, and took about a year to finish it. From that, I learned my first valuable lesson: Plan Ahead.
Now, I look back on this and wince. It’s frightfully amateurish, and badly drawn compared to my current stuff; but we all have our first attempts. At least I managed to finish my first attempt. I also achieved my main goal - to get more experience drawing a complete manga. Believe me - no matter how bad the finished product turns out, nothing beats the sense of closure finishing something brings. Mind you, the story I chose to tell may not be the best choice for a first timer, but it did supply me plenty of opportunities to practise my drawing skills. This was the crucial first step everyone has to take. It always sucks, but stick with it and it will be greatly rewarding down the track.
This reads in the Japanese way, from right to left.
