This was written for an Australian manga project printed in early 2004 for a small run, for the purpose of introducing manga to an Australian audience. The book will be about 60 pages, and is intended to be a collection of short manga drawn/written entirely by Australian manga artists. I was asked to be part of this submission, and here it is in its entirety.
The story’s supposed to be super-short, and drawing inspirition from Adatchi Mitsuru’s “Short Program” stories (which I now own Volume 1 of). All in all, I was happy neither with the art or the story. Both were rushed, and while the end product is cute; that’s all there is to it - cute (and not even that sometimes). So much for trying to channel Adatchi Mitsuru. As of now, I’ve pretty much given up on channeling manga artists I admire, since the end product is never all that spectacular anyway. Since this piece, I’ve found that I could do a better job just by concentrating on doing my own work rather than comparing it with other artists or citing them as “inspiration”. Maybe I’m finally finding a niche and a voice I’m comfortable with.
This reads in the western way, from left to right. And for once: no dialogue!
