Q:

How much does TOKYOPOP pay you? How much do you and TOKYOPOP take from the sell?

A:

I can’t answer that question, because I’m bound by contract not to. You can ask other creators, but they are also unlikely to tell you - you will have to land a contract of your own. I ought to say, however, that no one outside of Japan ever became a millionaire by drawing manga. If you wish to draw manga professionally, then I suggest you keep a sense of proportion about you (and an extra job on the side). I draw manga because I love drawing it, and quite frankly, that is the best attitude to have when it comes to the subject of making money from your manga.

As for whether the pay is sufficient for a full-time job, I would say a cautious “Maybe”. This really depends on your standard of living and where you live, and since you’ll be paid in American dollars, it can be good or bad depending on the exchange rate. If you’re an American, my suggestion is: don’t quit your day job until you’re certain you can make ends meet.
