Answers to FAQs
Q:
How long does it take for TOKYOPOP to get back to me after I’ve submitted?
A:
That’s very difficult to say. TOKYOPOP is one of the few companies out there accepting unsolicited submissions, so they’re constantly buried in piles of new submissions every day, from all over the world. I don’t know what happens when a submission arrives at TOKYOPOP, but I don’t think it lands right on the desks of one of their editors - if it did, all the editors will be buried under a mountain of brown packages 10 metres high. I suppose it goes through a screening process, before an editor is able to look at it, and even find the time to read it and then consider whether he or she finds it interesting. And no, TOKYOPOP doesn’t have hundreds of editors. When I pitched, it was 2-3 months, but that was in early 2004. If you’re pitching now, it can be over 3 months before you hear a reply from an interested editor.
I should also say that if your submission is rejected, you wouldn’t be contacted in any way, and TOKYOPOP discourage emailed queries due to the sheer volume of people who would be emailing otherwise. There’s no time to send rejection slips for everything that comes through their doors, so if you’ve submitted to TOKYOPOP and haven’t heard from them for 6+ months, then you should assume the worst.
