ALIA 2023 Graphic Novels Shortlist + Global Comix Interview

Two exciting things! My latest “Women Who Were Kings” book “Catherine the Great” #4 was nominated for the Young Adult section in the ALIA (Australian Library & Info Association) Notable Australian Graphic Novels of 2023 Shortlist.

It’s always wonderful to see libraries embrace graphic novels, especially local graphic novels by Australia creators. For Aussie comic creators interested in getting their works into libraries through library suppliers, here’s my guide on how to do it. Don’t underestimate the importance of libraries to books and book culture–they and librarians (whether they’re public or school librarians) are very, very important!

Secondly, the comics site GlobalComix interviewed me for Women’s History Month on “The Dreaming” and a host of my other work, so many thanks to Jackson and Nen for doing that and the live broadcast.

For those who don’t know, GlobalComix is the successor to Amazon’s Comixology, where people can read and upload their own comics/manga/graphic novels. They have an app, and Image and Top Cow also publishes on there, so it’s a great place to check things out on.

ALIA Graphic Novels Group Interview

Librarian Marissa King from the ALIA (Australian Library & Information Association) Graphic Novels Group interviews me about “The Dreaming”, thanks to Iurgi for setting this up.

Libraries are very important for preserving the works of Australian creators, and I have here a link that will teach you how to list your comic with Australian library suppliers (NB. If you don’t have an Australian distributor, your work MUST go thru a Library supplier to get into a library).

“Beating the Loneliness Monster” – Part 4 in Youkie Magazine

Here’s the fourth and final installment of kid’s comic “Beating the Loneliness Monster” from Youkie Magazine in its July 2023 issue. Co-written with my niece Kelly, this is an awesome 8-page story suitable for kids aged 8-12, and for which Kelly has gotten a few fan mail about! Thanks to editor Nicky for making this happen!

Here’s some more School Magazine art, for issues 4-6 of this year. I’ll be doing some more great art for School Magazine in 2024 as well, so stay tuned!
Always great to work with awesome authors – in this case, the first is “Sai Wen Loses a Horse” by James Bean and Gillian Flaherty, and the second is “The Aeronaut” by Paul Malone.

“Beating the Loneliness Monster” – Part 3 in Youkie Magazine

Part 3 of “Beating the Loneliness Monster” is in Youkie Magazine‘s April 2023 issue, which is co-written with niece Kelly Tao. The final issue of Part 4 will be out in the July 2023 issue. Meanwhile, this issue also has a 6-page short story by my good friend Julie Ditrich (Writer) and Angie Spice (Artist) called “Fade”, which is a fantastic look at girls who get too drained when they are too much of a people pleaser.

I recently had a go at screen recording my art in Clip Studio Paint, and discovered that you can do some fun animation stuff with it. A lot of work, but fun to play with.
