Sample pages
There is no dialogue in these sample pages, due to copyright reasons. Naturally, the final version will have the dialogue — these are just a showcase of what the art in the book will look like. Interestingly enough, while the first book was done without any dialogue balloons drawn in as part of the art, the second book will be drawn with the dialogue balloons. This is because hand-drawn dialogue balloons tend to look much better since it’s more integrated with the art, and also because it helps ME, the creator, to plan the page layouts better. The Dreaming Volume 1 is the first story where I haven’t drawn the dialogue balloons in with the art, and quite frankly I prefer it the old way.
Art-wise, the book is done mostly in greyscales, with dot tones added in for texture effect. Greyscale toning is something that is often done badly… but here, I found a pretty good balance that is suited both for the lineart and the tone of the story. Like black and white art, greyscale toning is a matter of finding a balance between light and dark, and here it’s done fairly effectively. All of it was done in Corel Photo-Paint — I have Photoshop, but find that Corel Photo-Paint takes less memory when working at 1200 dpi greyscale.
